Butterfree Deck [Fusion Strike]

Overview

The new Butterfree from Fusion Strike expansion has a very annoying Ability. The Ability, Tricolored Scales let you put 3 Status Conditions [Burned, Confused and Poisoned] on your opponent's Active Pokemon when you evolve Metapod to Butterfree.

Butterfree, itself is not a good attacker since its only attack, Gust has only 90 damage. But, its Ability, Tricolored Scales can boosts other Pokemon damage when its other partner has the right attack. Also, Confused Status Condition from Tricolored Scales can stall and annoy opponent especially if your opponent keep flipping heads.

Adaptive Evolution

As this deck will mainly rely on Tricolored Scales, you need to evolve Butterfree as soon as possible. With the help of Adaptive Evolution Ability from Caterpie and Metapod, evolving will be a piece of cake. The Ability Adaptive Evolution let the Pokemon to evolve during first turn. So, even at start of the game, you can evolve Caterpie into Butterfree as long as you have Metapod and Butterfree in your hand. In other words, you can evolve Butterfree at any time. All you have to do is find Caterpie, Metapod and Butterfree from your deck.

Finding Grass Pokemon

Other the Quick Ball, Level Ball and Evolution Incense, Turffield Stadium can be used to find Caterpie, Metapod and Butterfree since all of them are Grass Type Pokemon.

Main Attacker

There is not better Pokemon than Salazzle in the Standard Format that can take advantage of your opponent Active Pokemon with Status Condition. Salazzle second attack, Derisive Roasting does 90 damage for each Special Condition on your opponent's Active Pokemon. With Butterfree Ability Tricolored Scales, you can put 3 Status Conditions on your opponent's Active Pokemon and Derisive Roasting will deal 270 damage. Furthermore, there will be addition
30 damage from Poisoned and Burned at the end of the turn. So, the total damage will be 300. To get this massive damage, only 2 Colorless Energy is required to use Derisive Roasting

You should only evolve Butterfree when you have Salazzle as an Active Pokemon and it has enough Energy to attack. This is because if you evolve Butterfree and you don't have Salazzle yet, you opponent's Active Pokemon can recover from Status Conditions during next turn by retreating and you have to re-evolve the Butterfree again.

Re-use Ability

The problem with the Tricolored Scales is that this Ability only works one time and you can keep re-using it. It is also not wise to put 4 Caterpie on the Bench because your Benched is limited to 5 Pokemon and you need to have some room Salazzle and other supporter Pokemon also. The best way to overcome this problem is by using Scoop Up Net.

Scoop Up Net let you put Butterfree including Caterpie and Metapod into your deck. So, you can re-use Butterfree Ability again by evolving Caterpie > Metapod > Butterfree from your hand. This way Salazzle Attack Derisive Roasting will able to maintain 270 damage.

Energy

You can use any type of Energy for this deck because of 2 Colorless Energy from Derisive Roasting. But, not every Energy is suitable for this deck. Only Capture Energy and Twin Energy are used in this deck.

When you attach Capture Energy to 1 of your Pokemon, you can search 1 Basic Pokemon from your deck and put it onto your Bench. You can use this effect to set up important Basic Pokemon like Caterpie or Salandit. On the other hand, if you attach Twin Energy to Salazzle, you can attack immediate as this Special Energy provides 2 Colorless Energy for Single Prize Pokemon.

Finding Cards

There are quite a number of important cards you need to find in this deck so that Salazzle Derisive Roasting can have 270 massive damage. To find specific cards, you need to use  Trainer cards [Supporters or Items]. And the most efficient way to find specific Trainers in the Standard Format right now is by using Shady Dealing Ability.

This Ability let you search Trainer card when you evolve Sobble into Drizzle or Drizzle into Inteleon. Drizzile Shady Dealings let you search 1 Trainers while Inteleon Shady Dealings let you search 2 Trainers. By having right Trainers cards in your hand, you can set up a lot faster.

Draw Supporter

The popular Draw Supporter, Professor's Research is not really great for this deck as there are many cards such as Caterpie, Metapod etc which you don't want to discard in this deck. Instead, Bruno [Single Strike] will be used as Draw Supporter in this deck. Bruno let you shuffle your hand into your deck and draw 7 cards if your Pokemon were Knocked Out during your last time. Since this deck only runs Single Prize Pokemon will low HP, you don't have to worry about your Pokemon not getting KO. So, you will be able to draw 7 cards with Bruno most of the time.
